late in the afternoon, while wandering San Gimignano, i found a museum of taxidermied birds from the late 1800’s. for some reason, after skipping over all other historical relics and archives throughout the medieval town, i decided this air-conditioned room the size of a swimming pool was a good stop. i somewhat reluctantly paid one euro to the wrinkled and wheezing gentleman poached by the doorway at a cluttered card-table, and he put my money in an aluminum safe oddly similar to the one i had when eleven. no need for a combination, just press the button and crank on the dial, scape the gears until it pops open. hundred of birds in dusty cases.
